4 Family Room Designs

2020 taught many of us that your home is a place you should truly love. Your family room in particular should feel like a warm and welcoming gathering space. Today I’m sharing four family room designs to inspire your next project.

So much about how you design your space will depend on the size of the room as well as your own personal taste. What sort of family are you? If you have younger children or pets, performance fabrics will really matter. If the room gets a lot of sunlight and does not have curtains that you pull, check out fabrics that are fade-resistant. Will you use it primarily for relaxing or do you need an area for toys or a corner for a small office?

One question that comes up alot: couch or sectional? Part of the decision is personal preference, but a lot of it is room size, layout, and flow. The room has to be able to support a sectional, meaning that people can easily pass through and around it. Additionally, you will likely want enough room for at least 1-2 other chairs to balance out the room a bit.

I offer one on one design consults and can also create mood boards like these that are unique to your style. You can reach me on Instagram @brooke.spater to connect with me. I’ve included sources for all of these room plans below so you can shop directly from here. I’ve written some other posts with family room mood boards, this one as well as this one are two of my favorites.

Room #1 notes: I love this rug. It’s so colorful and would allow a lot of flexibility if you change the room around a bit over the years. This couch is rated as highly comfortable. The fabric is easy to clean, and it comes in a variety of other colors. A lot of the pieces in this room are budget friendly!

Room #2 notes: Green can sometimes walk in the shadow of blue, but it’s a great color. I am about to re-do my own family room, and this color palette is what I am aiming for. The Schumacher fabric for the pillow is one of their most popular prints. Generally, these fabrics are available only to the trade and I’m including a link for you to be able to buy this pillow direct. I love side tables with drawers, especially when space is tight.

Room #3 notes: Orange and blue look great together! If you are looking for a room that has a little “pop” to it, consider adding orange. The rug I chose would still work if you ended up reverting back to a more neutral room in terms of the lamps and pillows. I could not link the sofa; it’s from Room and Board.

Room #4 notes: I own this sofa, and it is hands-down the most comfortable couch I’ve sat on in my own home as well as anyone elses’s. There are endless pillow choices that would look good here, but I love this hydrangea print. I also love that it looks like velvet but is microfiber and therefor easier to clean. I brought a bit of a farmhouse feel into this one with the artwork and the white ceramic pitcher.
